Abstract

One major impediment restricting great expansion of aquaculture development, domestication and expansion are diseases which occur in all stages of production and species of fish. The global desire now is the use of probiotics which have some multi-dimensional benefits with generally regarded safe to the animals and the public health. The positive effects of beneficial bacteria on aquatic organisms have sparked extensive research, wide-ranging use in aquaculture, and innovative applications. The actions of probiotics in aquatic animals have garnered significant research attention in recent years. This paper reviewed retrospective view of probiotics including the foundation, discovery, evolution and potential bacteria with benefits used as a bedrock of probiotics. This paper also lay emphasis on extent of successful application of probiotics in aquaculture as growth promotion, immune modulation, improvement of water quality in both earthen and concrete ponds, and potentials on disease control and prevention. This review employed literature searches of databases and internet search engines such Google scholar, Pub Med, and Science Direct to identify peer-reviewed articles, reports and other resources relevant to probiotics in aquaculture. This review work will reveal some useful information on probiotics.
